The genre problem is that your readers do know. It takes extreme art to remind them that the characters don't.

Though I do enjoy seeing this subverted, like when “Feed” by Mira Grant had everyone (thanks to George Romero!) aware of exactly what zombies were and how to deal with them.

The metronome is a bad sign in my experience. I do not want to think of the quality of the book. I want to be bent on how Esmeralda sneaks in to use the magical key, or how Jane and Hephzibah quarrel, or the fight between Jack and Orlando.
