The red flags. Every single one of them, every time. Nothing better than finding out I spent a whole month writing in the wrong tense.

On the bright side, I don't find tense changing problems in my drafts.

The first draft is you, the writer, learning how to tell the story. And each following draft is the writer learning to tell it better.

Of course, you do have to tell yourself to stop polishing before you wear off the chrome. ๐Ÿ˜

And I must respectfully disagree with Brandon. That first step is the hardest; you're overcoming both inertia and fear of the unknown. During that first step, the writer is learning, but by bit, the challenges they'll face and that they have the capability to keep going.
